Dharwad is derived from the Sanskrit word 'dwarawata': 'dwara' meaning "door" and 'wata' or 'wada' meaning "town". Dharwad is also called as a hilly town. Dharwad is the second largest city of Karnataka state. Dharwad became the city to have the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Karnataka. Dharwad peda is an Indian sweet delicacy unique to the state of Karnataka. One of the largest automotive manufacturers, Tata Motors, has a commercial vehicle manufacturing facility at Dharwad. 

Dharwad district is the place which produced national and international level musicians like Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal, and winner of the Bharat Ratna award, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
